Abstract

If it weren't for the war, this year would be the year of Hryhoriy Skovoroda for Ukraine...

However, the war on our land is still ongoing, and there are no signs of its quick end. Since World War II, our nation has not experienced such terrible destruction, human suffering, and sacrifice. However, the social, cultural, economic, and political dimensions of life in the conditions of modern war have changed significantly. We constantly and all the time observe the special sacrifice of Ukrainian soldiers (men and women), the sacrifice of volunteers, and the mass sacrifice of citizens of a democratic country. Although the state's role in organizing resistance to barbaric Russian aggression is undeniable, the voluntary sacrifice of society, its scale, and duration clearly show all the advantages of the democratic system and the strength of civil society. In contrast to the aggressor, whose authoritarian state, by total coercion, forced its subjects to pay a terrible price for imperial ambitions by betraying their rights and freedoms, Ukrainian society largely voluntarily complements state efforts for the victory of the evil empire.
