Abstract

The article aims to discuss the peculiarities of visual experience in the Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology of perception. Besides, the article outlines the influence of Husserl’s and Descartes’s works on the formation of Merleau-Ponty’s vision theory. The paper also examines the limits of this influence and how Merleau-Ponty's theory challenges the fundamental principles of the Cartesian and Husserlian doctrines. Furthermore, there is analyzed the role of the body in visual experience and, given the context, it also considers the specificities of the artist’s eye. The author concludes that visual experience in its particularity inextricably links with Merleau-Ponty’s theory of corporeality, which presupposes that for the phenomenological investigation, the body and its senses are as valuable as acts of consciousness. Such approach developed by Merleau-Ponty has become a methodological ground for the visual theory as an independent field of research.
