SOME ACTUAL PROBLEMS OF MASTERING OF HEGEL'S LEGACY: “PHENOMENOLOGY OF SPIRIT” IN UKRAINIAN TRANSLATIONS OF HEGEL'S LEGACY

The paper deals with two Ukrainian translations of Hegel's "Phenomenology of Spirit" – a complete one by Peter Tarashchuk, and a partial one by Ivan Ivashchenko (which covers only the "Introduction"). Both have undergone a contrastive critical examination to appreciate how adequately they reflect the original. (Some critical comments also apply to the accompanying article by the second translator.) A number of translations of the work into other languages were also taken into account (the English and Russian ones, considered as commonly understandable to the Ukrainian public, are cited quite often), occasionally some errors were noted in them. In general, it is quite natural to find errors in the translations of such an extremely difficult work as Hegel's "Phenomenology", but the same cannot be said of the two Ukrainian translations under scrutiny. The errors found in both of them are too numerous and often too flagrant (due to the space restrictions, little attention was given to the minor flaws), some passages of these texts constitute just a meaningless set of words. This means that the quality of the translations is not at all satisfactory. Both translators showed neither proper competence (particularly in German) nor proper diligence and responsibility. Therefore it is quite natural that their translation attempts turned out to be a total failure. Publications of such texts also points to some serious organizational problems in the translation of philosophical works in Ukraine. Thus, an adequate Ukrainian translation of this book of the Philosopher is yet to appear in the future. Further thoughts on the subject are to be exposed in an upcoming article in which translations of other Hegel's works will be discussed.
