Abstract

In the prefaces to the first German and first English editions of The Logic of Scientific Discovery, Karl Raimund Popper substantiates his vision of the method of philosophy in a discussion with the main trends of analytical philosophy of the time. He criticizes the methodological guidelines of the school that saw the method and task of philosophy in the analysis of ordinary language, as well as the school that saw the method and task of philosophy in the study of the «language of science» and the construction of artificial model languages, and points out the inefficiency of these approaches with respect to traditional philosophical problems. Instead, Popper advocates a view of philosophy as an intellectual activity that, in interaction with science, aims to deepen our understanding of the world and ourselves, and whose general method (as with any rational cognitive activity) is rational critical discussion.
